Key Terms

The Client refers to the commissioner, who provides materials to be edited and payment for the requested service. The Editor refers to the person being commissioned to provide the requested service.Blind Editing is a process where an editor marks a piece of writing for corrections and alterations without scrutiny from its author. Upon completion of marking, the document is returned to the author, who may then employ the editor’s corrections.Line Editing refers to a process where a piece is edited on a line-by-line basis. The writing is marked for flow, grammar, and clarity on these terms. The scope of editing ranges from single character mistakes, to the adjustment of sentences or sentence groups, including the removal or rearranging of words, sentences, and paragraphs.Line Editing does not include comprehensive checks for consistency with lore, research, or character/story arcs, nor does it include evaluation of themes. Small consistency mistakes, such is inconsistent spelling of names, or incompatible descriptive elements, may still be marked.---The Blind Document is the separate document that the editor works in during the blind editing process. The Client Copy Document is the marked version of the document that is delivered to the client.

Commission Steps

1 - Service Selection and Commission Overview

  • The client selects a service, Line Editing.

  • The client fills out the service questionnaire.

2 - Quote, Material Provision, and Down-payment

  • Based on the answers given to the service questionnaire, the editor will provide a quote for the cost of the work and an expected date of completion.

  • The quote and date of completion will vary based on the length of the work and extent of necessary editing. The date may be altered during the course of editing by the editor if the extent of the editing changes.

  • The client may not request a nearer date of completion. The editor does not offer work under a rush-fee.

  • Once the quote is approved, the client must provide the piece for editing in one of the following forms:

  • A shared online document (Google docs)

  • Share the document via google docs to the delivery email.

  • The delivery email will be provided upon approval of the quote. Do not share a document for editing until the editor confirms your quote.

  • A word document (.DOCX) or open document format (.ODF)

  • Email the document to the editor or upload it to a file-sharing service which.

  • The delivery email will be provided upon approval of the quote. Do not send or upload a document for editing until the editor confirms your quote.

  • Currently accepted file-sharing services are Filegarden and Dropbox, or any service which does not require account creation.

  • The procedure for editing varies by the form of delivery chosen for the document. See the Process section below for a detailed explanation of the process for your chosen form of delivery.

  • Before work can begin, the client must provide a contact for one of the listed methods of payment below. The editor will issue one invoice to the client at this time. This will be a down-payment equal to 25% of the total value of the commission, which must be fulfilled before the commission can proceed. The client should verify that the invoice has been sent by the appropriate account before fulfilling it.

  • - Paypal - Kane Writers Services

  • - Venmo - @magisteremkane

  • - Cashapp - $magisteremkane

  • Only the editor will initiate invoices or requests for payment. The client is not to provide payment outside of these invoices or requests except as part of a voluntary tip/gratuity.

3 - Work Begins

  • The editor will begin work, and will generally only correspond beyond this point to update the client on progress, seek clarification over materials provided, or warn of changes to the expected date of completion.

  • The editor will work in the blind document, a private copy of the provided materials not visible to the client, until delivery. Please see the Process section below for a detailed explanation of the blind line editing process.

  • If the client wishes to cancel the commission at this point, they will be charged according to the following guidelines:

  • The client will be charged a percentage of the total cost of the commission equal to the percentage of currently completed editing, rounded up to the nearest 500 words. The minimum fee will be 25% of the total cost of the commission, which is covered by the down-payment. If the client fails to pay this charge, the incomplete edited material will be withheld, and the client will be barred from future commission work until the charge is paid.

  • At client request, for commissions greater than 10,000 words in length, a summary of progress can be provided at the halfway point of editing (i.e. at 5,000 words for a 10,000 word commission). This summary will include an explanation of the most common trouble areas and a description of the extent of necessary editing. Specific examples of feedback may be provided at the discretion of the editor.

  • This request may be presented at any time, and will be fulfilled once the editor reaches the halfway point of editing.

4 - Completion and Delivery

  • Once editing is complete, the client will be given a summary of the extent of editing and a description of the most common trouble areas. The editor will then issue an invoice or request for the remaining commission payment. The client must fulfill this payment in exchange for access to the edited materials.

  • The final charge for the commission will be issued as an invoice or request on the same platform as the down-payment. Payment may not be split amongst multiple platforms. Payment may be provided in installments, but edited materials will not be released until the cost of the commission has been covered in full. Any installments paid after completion of editing are forfeited in the event of a cancellation.

  • Only the editor will initiate invoices or requests for payment. The client is not to provide payment outside of these invoices or requests except as part of a voluntary tip/gratuity.

  • Except in the case where the client is fulfilling final payment in installments, according to any terms and due dates agreed to by the editor.
